good to see someone remembers the John Kelly hydroplane..I was fortunate enough to have ridden one around 65'..amazing board from a truly innovative surfer.
just by the way: the one I rode had a way different fin template than that shown on the patent document. it was a much more sleek and foiled job, very much like the Greenough stage 4 fins that came out in the late 60's. I'm thinking there was a connection. and yes the planing surface.. always the attempt to find the holy grail between release and control.
